Mile 1470, Road-side petroglyphs in Capitol Reef.
I’m not much for stopping at the side of the road for the sights, I’m finding out. Most times I’d rather roll past and enjoy the ride. However, there is an evolving list of things that will get me to stop. So far the top two things: dinosaur-related anything and petroglyphs. These were so high up the cliff, I wonder if that’s where the ancient peoples’ solid ground was at the time or if other, more acrobatic, precarious feats were needed.
It’s so interesting to see who else stops at these places: People with children or dogs who, besides wanting to see the petroglyphs, probably take advantage of most pull-offs to get a little time out of the car. The older couple in bucket hats swatting gnats away. The larger gentleman in a Panama hat and khakis, starting to wilt ever so slightly outside of his air conditioned car, waiting for his bright lipsticked wife to snap the picture. A group of three guys talking loudly yet taking the time to make the walk and flick a glance at the cliff. Then there’s the girl who has her motorcycle key in her front pocket going from the incredible human achievement in front of her back to the bliss of blacktop in all this beauty.
