Mile 1561

Mile 1561, Little Wild Horse Canyon.

Just off the road to Goblin Valley you can pull off and hike to the slot canyon. I didn’t get very far in (hiking in motorcycle boots isn’t fun. I’d get smarter about bringing sneakers later), but I had the place all to myself.

Slot canyons are pretty magical, and this was my first one. I hiked maybe half a mile through a pebbly dry riverbed next to high cliffs until the rock confronted me. The riverbed narrowed and admitted me through a rift in the towering sandstone past sinuous layers the wind wore down. If I had the time or footwear, there was an 8 mile loop to hike. That means there’ll have to be a next time.
